UNICEF May Consider Investing in Blockchain Startups
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced a program to support technology startups. Under the program, the fund may invest in blockchain-related startups and initiatives.
Christopher Fabian, the head of Innovations Fund at UNICEF, stated the fund, that had already received around $9 million, would focus on three areas: learning products, real-time informing, and development of infrastructure to facilitate access to services and information.
“These three areas are ripe for investment due to rapidly changing technologies such as blockchain, 3-D printing, wearables and sensors, artificial intelligence and renewable energy,” he said.
Startups willing to win a grant from UNICEF, may apply for participation before February 26. The application, however, shall meet several requirements, including availability of a team, availability of the product’s working prototype, the product’s applicability for children, and value of the created open code intellectual property
The news note at UNICEF website lists three areas the fund intends to focus on in the course of the program.
- Products for youth under 25 to address a range of needs including learning and youth participation;
- Real-time information for decision-making; and
- Infrastructure to increase access to services and information, including connectivity, power, finance, sensors and transport.
